Hey all, little red cedar here taken up from the very base of a large maple. Survived the winter which I honestly didn't expect here in Michigan, but now the trees are budding and I have a few projects including transplanting this one to a better location. Only thing is, in a week since I last saw it it's began dying at the top and also at the tips and I need a quick diagnosis if any of you can help me get this thing healthy! Thanks!

You havent seen it in a week? Thats not good.
Browning/yellowing leaves could be many things. Too much/too little water is the most probable. Its an evergreen so its hardy enough to stay outside.
That soil looks very organic. Is it draining well? evergreens dont like to be too wet, you need good draining soil.
Im in Michigan too, where are you from?

I am not a fan of this species at all. Eastern Red Cedars are the devils minion.
Having said my peace just watch the watering and they love light.

I've been watching it since last summer, waiting to take it up this spring. It's on my parents property, so I saw it last last week sometime and it didn't look this way, came back to get it Easter Sunday. It's possible we had some wet weather between my visits, I just don't remember.
Soil is recommended by a local growco/bonsai nursery for this tree to live in for a few years, drains well enough.

Oh ok. If they recommended it. From the pic, it looks very dark and organic, like topsoil..bad for bonsai. As long as it drains well. I guess i would keep it on the drier side for the next couple of weeks, like i said, evergreens prefer to be dry rather than too wet. They also like plenty of sun so I dont think it would be because of too much sun. Good luck.
