So, I would like to cultivate a bonsai tree. Iv read up on how to do this and i am confident i could produce a beautiful tree. The issue is the tree i want to train. I would like to train a sassafras and as i read more about cultivating one i keep finding issues with this kind of tree. Honestly I am curious to hear others thoughts on my upcoming project. Most any imput would be appreciated.

Nice to hear you are planning to try the art of bonsai. Although, the species you chose for your first time is not really suitable.
The leaf size is very big, which will not look good on tree that is trained as bonsai. Other problem is the root. Lauraceae type of trees (and usually trees that grow tall) dont grow roots close to the soil surface. They rather go deep down. It will be a big problem when trying to train it to fit a bosai pot.

Is there particular reason you want to start with this tree? Are you going for indoor or outdoor bonsai? Which region of the world you live? Will that be your very first tree?

Yes it will be my first attempt, i wanted to do indoor bonsai first. The only reason is Its my second favorite kind of tree and i am in North America.

Iv also had root issues just trying to transplant them. The roots dont react well to being cut. The only one iv managed to move i dug the entire root system up. Im unsure if it will leaf out this year or not its always tense in the spring witing to see if it made it.

No i don't sadly im having troble getting one to transplant at all.

So you have them in your garden ?

If they are so difficult to transplant why not try something that is not difficult. There is no point in keeping killing plants for the sake of it. There are many species that are easy, even ones that will survive inside!

My family owns a few acres of woods and have so many there they start growing in the lawn and end up being mowed or steped on. I believe once i get one growing it would be a good out door bonsi but im begining to think it wont work well as an indoor. Id also like to try an eastern redbud and a dogwood at some point.
