hello first time posting. I'm new to bonsai and got my first tree as a gift from a friend but they didn't know what kind of tree it is have been looking at pictures of random trees on google but didn't see anything that looks like it. any knowledge you guys could pass on would be greatly appreciated! thanks

It is a juniper squamata , although juniper are good for bonsai you're tree is not a bonsai but it can be trained to become one you must study a lot but .

Its looking good, it will take some time but for sure it can become a nice bonsai, Enaisio is right, study first then you get the picture of what to do with it.

It is a chmeacyparis pisifera Boulevard, not a juniper. I found them to backbud reasonably well, if given lots of water sun and fertilizer.
It can be trained well into bonsai, but requires a good understanding of growth.

Sorry my bad, it looked very similar to my juniper but I guess leatherback is right because my juniper grows mostly horizontally but yours is growing straight up
