Hi fellow bonsai enthusiasts!
Now that the spring has finally arrived to our neck of the woods, I've been contemplating collecting a few cuttings from a cherry tree whose branches have been hacked down to just a few and rooting them for future bonsai trees.
I have a few questions:
-when would be a good time to collect the cuttings (the branches just started flowering)
-would I follow the advice on this site (the only example I could find was about the ficus cuttings, I'm not sure if that applies to cherry trees)
-is the cherry tree suitable for this, in the first place ? (I guess this should've been my first question)

I do no think cuttings from cherrie would work. But I have no reasons for it. Just doesn't feel like the sort of plant that reproduces well from cuttings. I would go for airlayering. Big benefit would be that you can go for a bigger branch straight away.

Hello there.
Cherry trees are typically propogated from woody cuttings late winter or when it is already in dormancy. But there are a few types that are not dormant. Note that there are a lot of types of cherry trees and not all of them are optional for bonsai. Wild trees are mostly a good way to go as they have shorter internodes and smaller leaves.
Investigate the mother tree at first. You also can air layer cherry trees, which should take place in the summer, weeks after flowering.

Posted 7 years 9 months ago #31004The reason they don't do it that they get woody very soon. Before flowering the tree concentrates on the flowering and it is impossible to make a cutting root. After flowring it gets woody too soon and it is not the best time again. Thats why they do a late winter woody cutting. They root very well. But for bonsai.. yeah a nice air layer would be much betterleatherback wrote: I do no think cuttings from cherrie would work. But I have no reasons for it.
