Hi I've recently acquired this Japanese Acer from my neighbour and was looking for some help, advice and guidance on what to do with it.
Thanks in advance

Hi there ,
First of all I would clean up the soil and I'm pretty sure it needs repotting but you should carefully pull it out the pot and check if it's root bound, if it is , now is the time to repot it , if you know what you're doing, i would also give it a nice root prune and start training it to a shallower pot as it has quite a good girth :)

Thanks for the reply. I am definitely going to be repotting into a shallower pot. Do you have any suggestions on style? What branches to remove and what to wire? Or should I just repot and let it grow for a few more years?

For now just repot and learn to take care of it and make it grow vigourosly, don't go too much smaller with the pot yet ,do a little at a time , before you do , read up on the species and how to take care of it and make sure you pick a good substrate . After you've done all that repost a photo of the tree and ask a more specific question :)

In all honesty I think the branches you have are way too heavy with no taper and they all whirl from one part on the trunk so i feel you need to start again.
i would suggest reaserching what makes a good nabari and root system first get that right, over the next year or two and improve the vigor of the tree.
You should always start planning a future of a tree from the base (nabari) upwards you need to get that right first so check out and search for building a new nabari.
So get that right first.
Second grow the required trunk thicknesses for size of tree you require.
In the mean time research how to build proper branch placements through repeated chopping and wiring starting new leaders and so on, this will improve the taper aswell let the new branches grow and chop them back to improve taper.
Once you have correct branch placement work on the apex and its taper.
Then and only then in 5 to 10 years you can worry about improving ramification and final wiring.
It will take a while but still be fun. Reasearch all the techniques first.
