Since I got my first tree a few weeks back my eyes have not stopped looking around at the various types of trees I pass on a daily basis. Just so happens that I only noticed the tree that has been in a pot in my mother's house for as long as I can remember. I think it has the potential to be very good material to work with. My mother seems to think it could be Japanese maple and I think she might be right. So could someone please let me know what it is and if it has potential?

The base oft the trunk is going to be a problem that's not easy to solve. I wouldn't choose this as bonsai material
I suggest you wait until it grows leaves, to see what exactly it is.
