Chinese Juniper with disease was created by Mitchw

I recently was giving a nursery stock Chinese juniper mint julep as a gift. It appears that all the lower and older foliage (as well as the branches and trunk) have a type of white powder covering them. The white powder makes the foliage look bluish when compared to the rich green of the new growth. There was also random bits of foliage that died and turned brown. I have see no sign of any insects so I'm pretty sure it's a disease.

Can someone please help me identify the disease and give advice on how to treat it. I tend to think it could be a type of blight on the tree.

Some advice would be very helpful and appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Older foliage will be darker and random bits of foliage dying off is something that happens. It's not abnormal.
I'm not sure about the white color. If it really is a white powder, it may be powdery mildew. Haven't seen that before on my junipers, I don't know the cure, so I guess you could Google it.

Thank you for your reply Auk.

Anyone else know what the white powder could be?

Did you get chemical fertiliser over the white parts?

It can be scale or mildew - though it seems mildew on junipers is rare.
Please post a close-up of the white foliage. Also tell a bit more about the powdery stuff. Does it come off easily? Is it only powder you see, or do you see white lumps?
Is the white stuff sticky ?

Yeah it's really odd if it is mildew, especially as I live in a very dry climate.

As for the white powder, it is not sticky. It can be rubbed off but not super easily. It seems each scale has a thin layer of the white powder. It isn't white lumps of any sort really. It is almost more like a thin white layer and I say it's a powder because it flakes and falls off like powder when I rub it.

I'm going to say it is natural. It's not scale, and mildew seems unlikely.
To me it looks like resin, secreted by the leaves.
As it is on every scale, this seems to make sense. However, I'm not sure as it is supposed to be a bit sticky.

Looked up a picture - please compare and do wait for a second opinion.

Ok thanks for the help.

I see that image, mine doesn't really look like that.
I also have a feeling it's something natural. Will just wait for a second opinion and hopefully find out exactly what it is.

To me it looks like watering residue. Calcium salts. You water with tap water or spring water? Spraying the plant?

I only recently got it from the nursery. And I'm pretty sure it was watered by sprinklers there.
