How Can I revive my bonsai tree? was created by Lalaby123

Hi all..I bought a ficus tree from ikea a year ago....It is looking very unhealthy recently....having lost most its leaves. I water about once every 2/3 weeks.....no fertiliser so far.....it's in a part sunny south east facing location. The side away from the sun has lost more leaves.
Please see photos attached. Does it need repotting? What should I do to bring back the leaves? What am I doing wrong?

That's a ficus from Ikea indeed - and it's not a bonsai.
You can find care guidelines for ficus on this forum, and loads and loads of posts from others with a similar type of houseplant, the same problem, and the same answers. The Search option is in the top right of the forum menu-bar.

As this is not a bonsai but a houseplant, you actually don't need bonsai specific guidelines. You may actually get better answers on forums for house plants. There are forums specifically about ficus.

You have been doing a good job at keeping it alive but it is not thriving. I love all things green and growing but as this is a bonsai forum I am with AUK on this one. I know it was sold to you as a bonsai but what you have is a houseplant. davesgarden.com or garden.org have good forums for houseplants. I hope you find what you need for the little guy.

You said you water once every 2/3 weeks. How dry is the soil before you water, or you just wait 2-3 weeks to pass and then water may be? To me this looks like drought here, but I am no expert to tell. You may have to change watering habits. Check the how-to tutorial about Ficus on the website here. Good luck.

yes I was just waiting a couple of more (or sometimes more because I had read overwatering can cause leaf drop) and then watering...i was not checking the soil. It always looked pretty dry to me but I thought thats how it should be. I will start watering more and checking the soil. I wondered if the roots were ok sticking out of the soil as in images or they should be covered in soil hence need repotting in a bitter pot?

You should wait for soil to dry before next watering but not leaving it dry for long. Its how you should water, not on schedule. I hope your tree recovers. Note that there could be other reason for leaf fall as well but I cant tell. Start with proper watering for sure. And read all on ficus handling too. Keep in mind that your tree can not be labeled as bonsai, though its how they sell it in IKEA, so Auk is right. If you are interested in 名媛直播 I encourage you search and read on the matter.

Welcome to the forum and keep us posted. Good luck ; )

Have a look. I have an ild thread somewhere with a very similar ficus. You can make a nice tree out of this. No matter what negative responses you get right now.

I find these grow better if they get a bit more water. For now, consider a bit larger pot too. Havr you given it some fertilizer?

Check the plant for spider myte. I find ficus can get is easily when unhappy.

Hi there,
I'm also just starting in bonsai care (this is actually my first comment on this forum) and i also got a ficus.
I was wondering why you say that a ficus is not a bonsai tree? I read on this website "名媛直播 are not genetically dwarfed plants, in fact, any tree species can be used to grow one." so i don't really understand why everyone is against the ficus

Welcome to forum Michael. Almost every ficus can be grown into bonsai. Having ficus in pot does not mean you have bonsai though. It has to be grown using bonsai techniques and following this art aesthetics. So if you start searching these two main fundaments you will eventually understand the difference. Ill be more than happy the experienced here to dive in deeper into this matter that puzzles so many beginners.
