premna microphylla - Branch dying back

I have 2 pots of premna microphylla. Recently I cut down the growing branches (with big leave) back to Y-section with 2 secondary branches. After a few weeks, the trimmed branches start to dying back and the leaves started to dry off. The other parts of the plants are still growing well (leaves remain fresh and green).
What did I do wrongly ? Could the drastic cutting back of a leading growing branch could have caused the remaining branching to wither ?

I do not know premna. But no all plants sprout leaves if you cut them too far. And the cascading branches are always weaker than the top of the tree. So it could be yes.
I see a few bits of wire. Did you unwire the tree? Winding wire off a tree is another good candidate for die-back.

I unwire it after the cascade branch diedoff but did not remove the whole wire. You may be right that I cut too far back, removing the large leaves at the growing tip of the cascade which could be the energy source for the plant.
It was such a waste that the branch died off after training it for a year. I have since snipped off the dead branch and will have to restyle it. .
