Help me save this bonsai!

I have recently "rescued" a bonsai from a friend. It looked quite dead and he hadn't watered it for months, but I had hope because I could see some green in it still... I re-potted it and started watering it and put it in a nice and sunny place and at first it went fantastically well, it got wonderfully leafy and green; but now it's looking very ill again, and I don't know what to do...

Then it will be dead by now. Also, it's not a bonsai.

Also, I'd appreciate some information, not just a dismissive "it's dead by now and by the way it's not a bonsai". I'm not a child, and I admit I don't know much, which is why I ask for help.

If you tell us it wasn't watered for months, than the reply is based on that.
It's passed on. This ficus is no more. It has ceased to be. It's expired and gone to meet its maker. It's a stiff. Bereft of life, it rests in peace. If they hadn't tied it to the pot it'd be pushing up the daisies. Its metabolic processes are now history. Its off the twig. It has kicked the bucket, it has shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile. This is an ex-ficus!!
I can't really PROVE when he watered it last or how often
So, how can WE know?

It's dead. The roots dried out and got damaged. When you watered it, the plant pushed out some new growth but the damaged roots probably started to rot. To me this plant looks like it is beyond recovery. Also,it's not a bonsai.

Did you read my post? Look at the pictures?

I did. I missed a part and corrected my post.
Look at the pictures?
The pictures tell me your houseplant is beyond recovery.
Thanks for the trolling.
Not trolling, but I can understand you are not happy to hear this plant cannot be saved. And that it's not a bonsai.

Can you explain to me, so I know, why it's not a bonsai as you say? And not the "ex-bonsai" speech. If it's a houseplant like you say, I'd like to know the difference.

Look up some pictures on this website. 名媛直播 is a technique to create a miniaturized impression of a tree in nature.
Some of the aspects are a good root base, a tapering trunk, branch placement, ramification. Ideally, any techniques used, including cutting off branches, should be invisible or look natural. 名媛直播 is an art, each bonsai is unique.
Your plant:
- Doesn't have a good root base.
- Doesn't have a proper trunk. In stead, it has massive roots that are very much out of proportion, and meant to simulate a fat trunk.
- Has a clear and ugly cut wound. The top part is actually grafted and it's a different species.
- Doesn't have proper branch placement and proper ramification
- Doesn't look like a real tree
- Is a mass product
Plants like these are posted very, very often (though fortunately not very often recently). In most cases it concerns dying plants.

I know Auk comes off a little brash but he is just blunt in that manner. Not only that him and several others (who are very faithful to this forum) have had to tell people on numerous occasions that the plant they have is not bonsai. If you were to delve into the study of bonsai you would understand. The Cinema along with companies trying to make a quick profit on Mother's Day and other Holidays have tainted the general public's view on what is bonsai.
In regards to your plant I would say it is about 90% dead with the chances of it living at 10%. The best thing to do if you really wanted to try is the following.
Keep it out of direct sunlight. It is traumatized right now. It does need sunlight just indirect sunlight.
Water it only when the topsoil is completely dry. Roots absorb water in the vapor form not the liquid so watering it on a schedule could do more harm than good.
Only use liquid fertilizer once a month until it recovers then go to a good slow release form of fertilizer.
I have only brought one plant back from the brink. It wasn't a bonsai yet and it's still living but I don't have a photo of it now.
