Can someone please ID my new bonsai? was created by Deb_Rad

Hi, my husband just bought me this bonsai tree (photo attached) and it just says "名媛直播" on the tag. Can anyone tell me what kind it is? The leaves are very dark green and look delicate.

Thank you!

Hello..I am very new at this...so don't take my answer as gospel! It looks like it may be a gardenia....and it looks like the leaves are shriveled....so probably needs water.....don't let soil go dry or you will lose it. Now..all of you experts reading...please reply...I would hate to see this little plant die.
Also....I don't like that kind of planting...I'm guessing you purchased it at Home Depot or Lowes? They glue the rocks together...ugh. I've resisted buying one for that reason....not sure just how to even get it out of the pot and glued rock to help it. Okay...experts...waiting to hear from you!
PS...I love Nigel Saunder's Youtube teachings! Enjoy!

I may also be a ficus....but regardless....we need the experts to reply...and I think it needs to be repotted....get it out of that nasty glued rock....but again...I am a total beginner...so we will both learn when the experts decide to reply. Good luck and don't give up....maybe a local florist or year-round greenhouse can look at your picture and help if you don't get answers here. I'm guessing the experts are just shaking their heads...and muttering something about us rookies. Don't worry...they were just as green as us....and in fact...I've always been told that being green (when it comes to plants) is a GOOD thing! Don't forget to speak kindly to your plant.....that always helps.....if in doubt...read the book "The Hidden Life of Trees"...what an eye opener. Plants are intelligent and feeling entities!

Thank you! Yes, I noticed it really needed water and I will care for it. I am mainly just wondering so I can check the toxicity of the plant because we have pets. :)

I'm also not asking if it's like a "real" bonsai or anything, It's a beautiful plant and I love it already. I've been reading some snooty comments after people asking innocent questions (not you!) Just mainly asking if I need to be really careful where I put it, I just wanted to a do a bit of research about it..

It is 99% certain a ligustrum of some sort. And unhappy at that. Do check for insects living on the leaves.
Glad to se eyou already noticed that this has not so much to do with bonsai.
If it is a (sub)tropical ligustrum, it can stay indoors in winter, but ideally goess outside in summer(Soft leaves). The glossyeuropean type cannot stay indoors.

Thanks so much! I shall look this up. And I don't think there are bugs, I think it really needed water. It was super light. I'm pretty good with plants I just really wanted to know the type so I knew what precautions to take with my brat cats :) I couldn't find anything that matched when I googled extensively.

This tree is far far away from 名媛直播. Not even a pre-名媛直播. To me it looks in pretty bad shape, but no surprise knowing from where it is acquired. Give some light to it and do careful watering. I would remove that dead moss and the awful gravel on the top, at least to know how wet is the soil below. Having pets, and especially cats (they love to eat greenies) is not best scenario for you. You should get rid of the plant if you are not able to well secure it from the cats. If you manage to keep the plant alive in the coming months and you still like it, then repotting in fine soil and nice pot should be considered. Good luck.

I'm with leatherback.. ligustrum probably (sub)tropical.. I have two of them.. the only time one of mine has look like this was because it didn't get enough water. I'm going to repot both of mine soon, as they need better soil.. although one of them just has older soil.

How often do you water it? how compacted is the soil?
