Is this normal? was created by tommyboy26

At the base of the tree the trunk is turning brown. This is only where the tree meets the soil. The tree appears to be growing ok but I only noticed it this morning.

Also the roots are coming up at the sides of the pot and on one side it's like the soil is been raised by the roots. Hopefully it's not anything for concern?

It is a banyan ficus and I have it about a week and have watered it 3 times as the soil felt dry on top. I watered it by pouring water over all the soil. I let it soak down then poured more water onto it and repeated this till water came out the drain holes on the bottom

The tree is in the window of my room in direct sunlight most of the day and not far from a radiator but it's a small room and it's the only place it will get good sunlight

Ficus is not requiring direct sunlight, it will do fine away from it. Just make sure it gets some light and not somewhere too shady. Having it close to a heater can be a big concern. I would move the tree.

That doesn't look like a happy Ficus to me. How old is the plant, and where did you get it from? Can we see a picture of the whole thing? That could be helpful for people with a bit more expertise than I on the subject of bonsai to gauge what degree of effort (or, more likely, lack thereof) you'll need to save the plant.
That's right, lack of effort; it looks to me like you're killing this thing with too much care. I'd chill out on the watering a bit. Don't just gauge by the top layer of the soil, but stick your finger in a bit and see if it still has moisture. It's been my experience that too little water is easier to recover from than too much; too little water stunts growth and costs foliage, but too much kills roots and dead roots mean a dead plant. That dirt right now is sodden, preventing the roots from getting any good gas exchange going and encouraging algal growth (see the green stain on the surface?). I'm also concerned about how those roots are looking - it may be time to look into repotting the plant. Given how small the thing is, you might actually want to raise it more like a regular houseplant for a bit to encourage some growth going.

Thank you for your reply. I have attached photos I just took now. I had put all ideas of doing anything with the tree until it was growing for a few months. At this stage I don't care if I never do anything but water it I just don't want it to die.

I bought it about a week ago from a garden centre.
