I recently purchased this common juniper at my local garden store. Do you think I can work with it yet or should it continue to grow? Suggestions?

Nice introduction...
Yes, a common juniper is suitable for bonsai. Count on some 15 years of growth to prepare it to become a pre-bonsai, and next a few decades to make it a bonsai.

welcome to the forum.
It depends a lot on your artistic abilities. Most people are unable to make convincein bonsai out of this. I have seen some examples of stunning bonsai using very young material that over the period of 5-10 years matured into wonderfull tiny bonsai. I would recommend starting with something a little more mature & larger. That gives you more branches and space to work with.
Just as a rule of thumb: Thickness of the trunk, time 6 to 12, is the height of the finished tree.

Thanks for the tip! Its fairly obvious that i'm not particularly experienced in bonsai, but i'm grateful for all the help i can get. I'll make sure to invest in a more mature tree next time.
