How do I get taper in a coniferous bonsai? was created by holmstrom

Hello all, I have been trying to learn how best to improve taper on a coniferous bonsai... it seems easy enough on a deciduous tree, where you can simply trunk chop and choose a new branch as your trunk, but i want to be able to increase the taper of my black pine. I know that i cannot simply cut all the way down to the bottom of my trunk, as this will kill the pine. Most of my research has shown that you have to style a pine from early on it its life i.e wire it when it is only a few years old to get movement, but if you do that and never do a trunk chop, how do you ever get taper? I cannot figure it out! Please help!

You use sacrifice branches. And if you grow pine for bonsai, you keep a very low branch very short, while the main trunk is left to grow. Then you chop the main trunk once the dsired tickness is achieved. Not hard to do, but it does require a bit of patience.
