Allotment dedicated to bonsai was created by Westy

I am planning to put 75%+ of my stock in the ground down at the allotment for the next 5-10 years for a few reasons..
1. I have created/collected more than I can fit in the garden
2. To thicken the trunks
3. To give me some room to create/collect some more material this year

I was thinking of adding a tonne of gravel to the soil and turning it over to help drainage before planting, is this wise?
Anything else you would throw into the mix?

The species going in are buxus, maple, spruce, pine, hinoki cypress, dawn redwood, ligstrum, cotoneaster, cryptomeria, and more!

Also I want to plant each of them on a tile to promote a radial root base etc, any tips or threads your can direct me to help on this ?

Thanks in advance
Simon

I would not add anything to the soil, unless you are on pure clay. A bonsai pot is not the same as full ground.

Read up on ground growing before you start this. Otherwise you will end up with a lot of useless thick trunks in 6 years time.
If you have too much material now, do not collect more. More trees = less time per tree = lower quality.

as for roots, and

Thanks for that leather back some interesting reading there and as always your comments will be very useful, saved me a few quid on gravel at the very least!

I see what you mean with the less is more theory but....... I can't help myself!!! My theory was, if I threw enough muck, some woukd stick

Hopefully though, as I get more experience I will be more selective

Thanks again

Well, if you have the room for it, why not. I have quite a few in my garden, just growing there, for the future.
