Hello

I am completely new to bonsai. My wife bought me a kit for Christmas last year. I managed to grow one tree successfully. It has grown quite a lot in the first year. I have attached a photograph of the tree as of this December, so all the leaves have fallen off.

The instructions said to leave the tree for the first two years. However, the tree has got quite large and I feel like I need to do something to it. I really do appreciate that I have probably got this wrong and that this may be over as far as bonsai is concerned as it's potentially too large already.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I honestly don't have a preference of style or anything. I did wonder if sniping the tree halfway is a good or bad idea? Would that encourage new growth from the point that I cut at? The leaves are large too. They are about 4-5 inches in size. Also the book said to put the tree in a 10cm pot which is what the tree is in.

I don't really understand how I could have done anything differently. It got very big very quick and it was very weak until almost recently. It took one year to get to the size it is at.

It it a silver birch (betchula)

Please does anyone have any suggestions or is this one too la

rge for bonsai now? Thanks

Have you actually done any research during that year that you have been growing it?
This plant is not too big for bonsai. I'd rather say it is still far too small.

Keep it outside, in full soil, and just let it grow. Meanwhile start studying; this website is a good starting point.

Hi, well done!
Not many people grow a tree the first time they start out with seeds!

As Auk said.. This tree is still very young. In contrast to what people often think, most bonsai are not grown out, but cut back. In other words; you grow a big tree using verious techniques, and cut back to the size you want.

With Birch, keep in mind that they do not heal big cuts well. So do not let this grow untill the trunk is 5cm diameter and then cut back. With Birch I feel it is better to use sacrifice branches over trunk chopping.
