No fertilizer for nearly a year, survival chances was created by Klaudo

Hello wonderful people
My name is Klaud and i am just a total newbie just starting out with this amazing and fascinating hobby after i was given a lovely young (approx 25cm tall) Chinese Elm.
Due to me being soon away from home for nearly a year, and the only help i can rely on is my mother watering it, im seeking advice here . Do you think that bonsai can survive for nearly a year without fertilizing? Obviously the growth will be probably nearly nonexistent but do you think that it can be brought back to life after such a long starvation period? I do care about this particular piece and i would love to keep it for decades (it comes from someone close to my heart therefore i dont want to just buy another even if its the same specie). Advice is much appreciated

I don't see why it wouldn't survive. My Chinese elm is very strong and I didn't fertilize it my first year and a half owning it. I only bought fertilizer halfway through my second year and started fertilizing it then. I'd be more worried that because you're having someone else remember to water it everyday they might miss a watering on a hot day. Thankfully on that front as well, Chinese elm from what I know are pretty drought resistant.

As long as it is the open it will be fine. It might be a bit weak, but it will survive. If it was in the ground it would survive so why not? Having said that why not leave fertiliser to be used?

I would probably leave it out in the yard. Just plant it in the ground. Then, when you return, it will have grown taller, thicker and you might have a better trunk to work with. Unless this is already a well-developed tree. But I doubt that, considering you seem to be fairly new to the hobby.
As for fertilizwer: I think the comparison with starvation is wrong. The plants get theuir energy from the sun. Together with water and carbondioxide, these are the 3 main components for survival. Fertilizer only provides certain building block needed for sustained growth and functioning. Many plants can grow for a fairly long time without added fertilizer, ddepening on the substrate. I woulod not leave a plant wqithout fertilizer in a modern substrate fior a year.

You could also place a little fertiliser basket in 1 corner of pot, with granular fert. in it. When the plant gets watered, it gets a small dose of fert.
