If a branch is not needed, can it be cut off in the winter? Leaving a decent stub of course
I'm thinking if I thin out the branches now, more light will be let through this growing season and the mugo possibly back buds earlier
Thanks

Autumn and winter is very good time to do that as the sap flow is reduced and so will be bleeding.
I?d say go for it
Good articles to read first on bonsai4me.com, there is one for mugo pines too.

Thanks kristov
I'm going to have a go tonight!
I did read that article but it didn't say much about when to remove branches, loads on pinching candles and shoots, said to do it all in late summer, unlike other pines

you said it right. Cut freely but do leave a stub. Nice material

So following your help a while back I started clearing out some of the branches on this mugo but came to a standstill when I came across the 3 trunks pictured below, i don't really like the shape of any of them and can't pick any combo of 2 which I think would look right, and if I did remove any of the 3 I would be left with a huge gap in the canopy therefore the open oak style I was hoping for would be out the window, don't know what to do....
Any suggestions would be appreciated

Hard to tell from a picture, especially when it's just from one angle, but usually you would fill the gap by wiring and filling it up by bending the trunk and / or branches into place.
