Help North American Hornbeam with Yellowing Leaves was created by Sevangard
Posted 8 years 2 months ago #27574I just got this North American Hornbeam bonsai about 2 weeks ago, it was green when I got it. Now, it is turning yellow/brown with some spots. I am new to bonsai. I have watered it only once so far, by wetting the soil until water drained from the bottom. That is all I have done. It is indoors in my office at work, the temperature stays at or around 67° . It is in an east facing window and only gets afternoon sun.
Is it natural for the leaves to turn yellow/brown and develop spots?
Should I use tap water to water it?
Should I be feeding/fertilizing it?
Any help or suggestions would be amazing, thank you all!

1. It's autumn
2. It does not belong indoors.
3. It's not a bonsai
ny help or suggestions would be amazing, thank you all!
Plant it in the garden and forget it for a couple of years. Meanwhile, learn how to grow bonsai, starting with developing a trunk.

That's hot! Even humans wouldn't survive that.

This is an international forum. We use Celsius.

Posted 8 years 1 month ago #28006I have, since my last post, done a little research and learned that this is in fact a deciduous tree meaning it naturally loses its foliage in autumn.
I will use Celsius in the future out of respect for the fact that this is an international forum, my apologies for any confusion.
So, I can plant this non-bonsai in our Health and Healing Garden on campus. However, learning of my interest in bonsai, a new friend has emerged and given me a "real" bonsai, I hope. It is a Jade I believe. He said this is a good beginner bonsai. I will upload a pic and maybe you can tell me if I have another fake...

Posted 8 years 1 month ago #28008But there are other small trees that can be better starter material for you. I suggest you take a class and get some hands on learning and conversation about what's expected in bonsai. Then you can make a purchase with an educated mind.
best of luck

Try Jade. Easy to care for, easy to propagate, not really bonsai, but you can practice on 'm. Mine keeps spreading like the plague. I prune, plant the pruned bits, and it all just keeps surviving and growing, even though I very often forget to water them. I need to get rid of a few...
Funny plants in tiny pots, but not bonsai:

Posted 8 years 1 month ago #28041I am now very curious to hear what everyone else considers a "名媛直播" or even a definition.
Google says: "An ornamental tree or shrub grown in a pot and artificially prevented from reaching its normal size. The art of growing ornamental, artificially dwarfed trees or shrubs."
So, clearly the definition is not open to interpretation as per the previous posts about my plants not being bonsai, lol, so maybe someone has a better definition?
