Will I kill my bougainvillea?

Hello,
I need some advice about a bougainvillea I rescued this spring. I found it without a single leaf but I scratched the bark and I saw it was alive so I took it. The plant did survive, but because I kept it in the shade it did not bloom this year and I could not figure out what it was. A friend of mine solved the mystery two weeks ago and I decided to turn one of them into a pre-bonsai.
About 10 days ago I separated the two plants by cutting the root ball in half and repotted in larger containers without disturbing the roots any further.
Now, I want to make a cut along the red line I drew to create some taper to the trunk and start training it into a cascade form now that it is still young and flexible.
Do you guys think I can proceed with the cut or should I wait for the plant to recover from the transplant and cut it at a later time?
Thanks a lot in advance
George

Let it recover. If it was more dead then alive half a year ago, ity would have just started to rebuild reserves after the last ordeal, AND we are entering into winter: It will need the energy.
The trick to blooming is for boegies to keep them fairly dry, I have found.

Thanks a lot leatherback!
I will leave it as it is for now and proceed with the chop at a later time. Hopefully it will survive, and next spring I will get to see its color. I was told to leave it in the sun in order to bloom and after two sunny weeks its leaves at the top are having a reddish color. Maybe leaving it fairly dry, as you suggested, works too. I never had a bougainvillea before but here in Greece are very common and I will easily get the information I want to grow a healthy plant at first, and maybe a bonsai after some years.
Thanks again,
George
