I would repot right away, wash away all the soil and trim the roots.

What do you use as a growing medium?

80% zeolite and 20% bonsai soil from supermarket for better water retention.
Here is what I did with my ficus if you?re interested:

I have already seen it actually, pretty amazing :) I don't think zeolite is available in Hungary, I guess I will stay with a mix of akadama and lava rocks

I have neverseen them in garden centers. Do you think it is worth mixing with akadama as I have a half bag yet?

What part of the world are you? Ficus need heat and light to thrive. With winter around the corner, go a little slow.

I would not layer and repot any species at the same time. maybe do a non intrusive repot now, layer in spring. Ficus will take any substrate.

Its under mh lights and gets constant 21 celcius degrees. Theres a guy who owns a lot of ficuses and he says under these light you can do anything at anytime. Of course not all at once. Im going to repot now because it really needs it. It stays so wet all kinds of flying things started to appear around its soil. I will do the air layer in spring when I can put the tree outside again.
