Invisible Aphids? was created by 名媛直播 Bender

Before getting into bonsai I have had an issue with aphids on a gardenia. If you would bump the plant you could see all these little white bugs fly up. I was able to get them under control. Over the summer I am saw my Japanese Maple with some immature leaves that are curled. I was told it was aphids but I don't see the little white bugs like before. Could it be something else? Here is a picture of it at it's worse. I have gotten it back to a healthier state but in preparation for next year please help.

White bugs are probably white flies, not aphids. They can be managed by spraying with horticultural oil, insecticidal soap or neem. Aphids come in green, black, and red, I think, with the green ones being the most common. Adults have wings, juveniles don't, and they and the juveniles are rather sluggish. They don't fly around when disturbed like white flies do. Aphids can be controlled with the same sprays as I mentioned for white flies. Check the spray product label for correct timing of the application, and to be sure your plant can tolerate it.

Aphids will cause curling and distortion of young leaves. They especially like tender, new foliage. Whatever you did to clean up your tree worked well. I'm not an expert on Japanese maples, but I've read that they do not like wind or drought so browning of the leaf tips could very well be caused by heat or drought or both. Site you tree in dappled shade, out of strong, desiccating winds, and keep it well watered. Good luck!
