Chinese elm dormancy was created by Matthew16929

Hello! I recently picked up a 5 year old Chinese elm and the bonsai master that was at the nursery told me that my tree was raised in the green house(inside) for all this time (no dormancy) I've read a lot of articles saying that it should be put in a dormancy stage. I'm still relatively new to the 3D art of bonsai. I live in Michigan in an apartment with no balcony
Am I safe to keep it indoors? I spent 50 dollars on this 'pre-bonsai' and I traveled a ways for this little guy .
Also I know no trees are out doors
I have 3 healthy figs and a young podocarpus grouping.
I just need to know if I'm going to kill my tree if I keep it inside over this winter

What was the advice you got from the bonsai master?

Chinese elm is semi-deciduous. I often read here that it should be kept outside, but that's not completely true.
It depends.

Your tree has been grown in a greenhouse al its life, so it won't be used to the cold outdoors.
I would not keep it outside in december and then bring it indoors in a warm room.
Better would be to keep it in a cool space.

So since it has been grown as a tropical should I always keep it warm?

I think I wrote 'cool', not 'warm'.

In colder areas they act like deciduous trees.
In a milder climate it can be evergreen - but it will have 'resting periods.
It will benefit from a brief cold period, allowing it to drop its leafs.

Still, it is an outdoor plant. You will not have sufficient light indoors.

Auk, do you mean allowing all the leaves to fall? I also have a chinese elm that was kept indoors.

the cooler temps in late september and early october haven't seem to effect the growth that started when I put it outside this summer.

But should I allow it to stay outside? my winters are not a lot different from yours? Michigan is much colder.
