Chinese Elm - Yellow leaves with green spots

I have a Chinese Elm which has been healthy for a while. Over the past 3 weeks, some new small growth has been yellow in colour with dark green spots. All other growth seems to be healthy, and the contrasting leaves can be seen in the pictures I have attached.
I need to nip the tips but have been putting this off because of these yellow spotty leaves
My trees have 3 hours of morning sun and then are behind a 40% filter screen for the rest of the day. It has been watered daily for the most part, except when there is still enough moisture. It is fertilized every 2 weeks with a correctly mixed organic fertilizer, either Seagrow or SeaSecret, which is applied to the soil, not misted.
I suspect that because I have not cut back the new growth this season, that most of the energy is being used on the growing tips on the crown?
Any insight as to what the problem may be would be greatly appreciated
(I am in South Africa, so we are in Spring, and yesterday was our first really hot day, but it has not been cold)

Posted 8 years 3 months ago #26649It needs more sun than that, and only water when needed, not daily. Up at the top there's a good link,
Trees love it outside

Posted 8 years 3 months ago #26653The tree's live outside permanently and when the sun reaches a point it gets covered by the filter, which blocks 40% sun, not sure if I phrased it correctly initially. The reason for the filter is due to the heat we sometimes experience. It will be 33 celsius (91.4F) here today and I was worried about boiling the roots in temperatures like that. Am I worrying for no reason?
Samantha,
Thank you so much for the watering tip, I test soil moisture by feel and when not sure, use a toothpick to check the moisture levels at the bottom of the pot, and generally, during this period, the soil is dry by the afternoon, if I have watered before work

We have those temps most of the summer even hotter. Gradually, move the shade away, it looks good now, but would probably grow better with more sun.

Posted 8 years 3 months ago #26661It is OK to water daily (provided the soil is well draining). You don't water it when it's still moist enough, so I really don't see issues.
Seems to me you're doing fertilization properly too.
As it only concerns a few leaves, it is quite unlikely that the shading is the cause.
Sometimes it just happens that new leaves turn yellow. As long as it's only a few, I don't see a reason for alarm.
Do monitor it to see if it is a real problem and more leaves turn yellow. You may want to check for bugs.

Posted 8 years 3 months ago #26790I will keep an eye for an increase in the yellow leaves and take it from there. Took your advice and checked branches, buds and under the leaves for bugs, but could not see anything immediately. I will go through again with a magnifier to be sure

Posted 8 years 1 month ago #27735Dropping old leaves is normal. Dropping young leaves is not. I see a healthy tree, that just needs a good trim. That will allow light to come inside the tree and stimulate growht
