How do you pot in the ground was created by Mossy moss

I want to thicken up my tree trunk so I am planning to pot it in the ground. But I'm not sure if there are special requirements for trees to potted in the ground. My garden has very clay like soil so I don't know what to do about that either.

When you put the tree in the groung you take it out of the pot or it defeats the object.

Essentially, the question 'how do I plant a tree' is not a bonsai question. You can Google it and find good information:

However, as you are preparing it to become a bonsai, there are some special techniques you can apply, like placing it on a tile to create a flat root ball.
Information can be found here:

Mossy moss, the article Auk referred is great. That whole website has answered so many of my questions. I am currently trying the one where you place wood around the base of the tree in order to force roots to grow above the wood to bring about a good nebari, hopefully. I can't wait until I can see results....it will be awhile though.

Should I just use the soil in the ground or should I use bonsai mix or possibly potting mix?

How have trees been growing for hundreds of millions of years? That should answer your question.

Hm. Not sure if I agree with that. If you had written: "how have trees been growing in their native environment" then yes. But trees have not been dug out, potted and transplanted for hundreds of millions of years, so I think this does not apply.

Okay, let me clear it up a bit. Yes, you shouldn't need special soil, the soil in your garden is fine.
