Hi everyone

My Name is Loki

im new to the forum, just want to say hi to you all, and ask a bit of help.

ive been doing bonsai for a bout 2 years now and just want to know a bit about casuarina pine.. i acquired one that was a dug out and planted it in the ground so just get the tree a bit healthy.

I stay in Durban in South africa so the humidity is normally from 70 to 90 percent all year round.
what i would like to know is, is it good for me to spray a bit of salt water on my pine?
and what is best for fertilizer ... and if i do cut will it grow back like normal cut and grow technique .

I would never spray salt water on any tree. Many species will be seriously damaged or even killed. I wonder why you would think it necessary? Have a look at bonsai4me.com for species guides and several books worth reading.

Hi
the reason y i ask salt water, is that i see a lot of the casuarina near the beach in durban... so they obviously like the salty air. alot like the japanese black pine if im not mistaken.

thanx for the link

Maybe, but that does not mean you should spray them with salt water, just plain water will do.

Don?t clip a pine as it won?t grow :)
That technique is for deciduous species.

Normally when you see plants growing in an area whe other do not, such as in the salt spray from the sea, this means they are the strongest for that place. It does not always mean they need the salt. You would have to look it up. I doubt there are trees that need salt to live, although some coastal herbs cannot survive without salts.

Casuarina is nothing like pines in their growth habit. I have only seen one erson on this forum who has one, and he is in Australia. Hs not been online for a year or so. For casuarina I would recommend also posting on the ausbonsai forum.

Yes, you can spray a bit of salt water to it if it comes from a coastal area. Here in the Philippines we have 2 or 3 different species that I know of Casuarina. One of those is found in coastal areas.

We usually use a complete slow release fertilizer (14-14-14) and alternate it with Ammonium Sulfate (21-0-0) or with Amino Acid Foliar Fertilizer.

If you cut a part of it it will grow a new one but not exactly on the cut part but most likely within the area around that cut, as long as the nodes are healthy.
