Ensure a future for my wedding gift was created by wrathfulbonsai

Hello,
I was recently given a bonsai as a wedding gift and I'd like it to survive a while. I've not looked after a bonsai before, but my wife had one a few years ago and it's not looking so good now.
I'll attach an image, but from looking online I'm pretty sure it's a dawn redwood. I think I can handle the watering / feeding of it from existing online articles. But I have no idea where to start with pruning or training. The original grower made the trunk very curvy, the branches are a bit all over the place and they don't start until quite high up the trunk.
Any ideas on what I could / should do with it?

It's a mallsai. Just prune the shoots that get too long to keep its shape.
If you really want to turn it into a bonsai: plant it in the ground for a decade and let it grow.
Meanwhile, start studying bonsai.
