Chinese Elm Help - Lost all leaves! was created by moon pie_57

I purchased a young Chinese elm about 3 months ago (early summer) I had it growing indoors all summer and it grew really well. It is/was my first bonsai tree and I did a lot of research. I have been giving it proper bonsai feed every 2 weeks and water it daily or as needed. It has been growing in the exact same spot on a windowsill with lots of sunlight and is turned every week or so. I live in the south east of the UK and weather has been very good all summer. The tree has a thick (for its size, about 2cm diameter) trunk about 12cm tall. Nice surface roots and 2 large branches. For what its worth there is also a layer of moss on the soil.

About 2 weeks ago I started to notice brown tips to a few of my leaves. After some research it suggested i may be overwatering and in the early stages of root rot. I took the tree out of the pot and checked all the roots. They were healthy and doing well. I decided to still cut down a little bit on water and to check more thoroughly if it truly needed it or not.

Over the last couple of weeks the problem has remained the same but now the leaves are falling off. The tree (not including the pot, is about 15cm tall) and it now only has about 6 leaves on it! The tree has also stopped growing new buds which it always used to. There are now only a few leaves and no new ones to grow in sight!

I have no idea what to do as I do not want to kill the tree and I don't understand what to do. I would like to learn from this situation and how to prevent it in the future as I now have a Japanese larch and juniper. which thankfully (touch wood) are both doing very well.

If any of you experienced people could give me some advice that would be wonderful! Thank you!

It is dead. I could change that opinion if you post pictures (clear ones, including close ups of the trunk, remaining foliage, the soil)

I now have a Japanese larch and juniper. which thankfully (touch wood) are both doing very well.

Not indoors, I hope?

Thats interesting, from what i'm seeing now that you say that, i don't doubt it. Do you think it would have died from overwatering?

Thank you for your help

To help you understand what your original question was like, let me make an analogy.

Say I went to a doctor and said that I got stomach ache at around 2 pm and I'd read that similar pain is experienced by people with Celiac disease after eating gluten. I then took a DPP-IV pill in order to try to reduce the symptoms and it hadn't improved since then.

What I neglected to state is that I was also stabbed in the abdomen at the time the pain started.

Context is extremely vital for diagnosis, so you should try to give us as much information as you can in order to help.

Sorry If I did not provide enough information. I am new to this whole scene and am by no means an expert. in fact quite the opposite. What information is it exactly that I did not explain properly?

Thank you

There's no need to apologise,

It's not that you didn't explain enough, it's that a lot of things could be making the tree lose leaves and things like position, watering, excessive trimming, etc. are all important things to tell us if you want us to help. Think quantity as well as quality of information.

My apologies, I do appreciate the help. Position has remained exactly the same since I got the tree as I said in the original post. The only large amount of pruning I have done was when I first got the tree as it was not styled. There has of course been pruning since then but never leaving any less than 5 or 6 leaves on each branch (as I had seen in pruning guides)

Watering was always done every day as it was only very slightly damp by the following day but I cut that down when I first started seeing the brown tips on leaves to more like 5 times a week. Aside from watering slightly less everything has stayed more or less the same as when the tree was thriving.

Weather has not been all that consistent as tends to happen in the UK. some days 30C but mostly very mild/ cold with a fair amount of rain.

The tree is in the same soil it came in and while it came from a nursery it does not look look regular bonsai soil, more like garden soil although i may be wrong on that. there is certainly no rock like material, all very fine dirt.

I hope that provides some more insight, Thanks again
