Ugly bonsai?

Hello all!
My first bonsai was a carmona bonsai, that I had for nearly two years. It had white mites on, and whilst they weren't a massive problem I'd tried everything to get rid of them to no avail. I eventually used pesticide on the plant and it died pretty much instantly, I didn't realise it would be so sensitive to it. I got this tree quite young and managed to grow it into quite a nice shape, with a nice canpoy structure (no pics unfortunately) and it's a shame it's gone!
I recently ordered a new carmona bonsai from ebay to replace it (I am in the UK). This new tree is already bigger than he previous tree I owned, with the tree being much taller and the trunk thicker. The s bend in the tree kinda just gives up towards the top, where it seems to have been clipped off pretty badly. All the branches that grow from the tree seem to grow haphazardly, many of them downwards and seem to extend too far out from the tree. The lowest branch also seems to start far too low. The branches are pretty sparse at the moment and even when new leaves sprout up it seems like it will still be quite sparse due to the branch structure.
Basically, I think this bonsai is pretty ugly - is it salvageable? What is your opinion on it (bearing in mind I haven't owned it for a week yet) ? What actions could I take to improve the tree?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Focus on getting it healthy. What I can tell from the pictures this plant is more dead then alive.
I do not do s-trunk bonsai, and as such will not offer you recommendations on how to proceed after that.

Interesting. The shop I bought this from claimed to take utmost care of their bonsai, and whilst I wasn't expecting the perfect tree it really doesn't seem to be the case. I will be in contact with them about it.
I removed the moss/assorted flora from the soil to find a load of roots stick up out of the pot. I reburied what I could and trimmed some ends that were sticking up. I then applied a layer of naruko feed and watered the plant as normal. I'm hoping it will begin to look a bit more healthy in a few weeks.

It's a mallsai, a mass-produced plant. They did not grow or train it, and the 'utmost care' they have given will consist of regular watering.
