I have read that when u water to water until some comes out the drainage holes. Is this correct?

I have a Crassula - looks a bit the same, requirements too are not very different.
I neglect them. No idea when I last watered them. They like that. I have far too many cuttings now, that are all growing.
What I did not mention is that you must not mist them - fortunately Leatherback added that.

you can water until water comes out of the drainageholes only when you have a very well draining soil.

I had a little branch break off. I stuck it in some bonsai soil and I think it's going to take. Easy as that.
No more misting and I will stop being so crazy about checking the water.
Relax with your jade plant, Ruth
Thanks heaps!

An easy way to know if a healthy P. afra (or most Crassula) needs watering is to look at the leaves. If they are glossy it's fine, when it needs water the leaves will start to look dull. The transition from glossy/shiny to dull can be a bit tricky at first but after a few cycles you should get the hang of it. If the leaves start to wrinkle it really needs water.
Again, this is for a HEALTHY plant. If yours is stressed the leaves may be dull while it recovers. If you do move it outside the plant may show some signs of stress initially - if the leaves dull make a watering judgement based on the soil.

Thanks, I will watch and see what happens with my leaves.

I am very hesitant to put it outside. I am from Michigan where weather changes to quickly. Sunny sky and then a deluge of rain . If I'm not at home I'd be worried about not protecting the tree from the elements. I worry that in and out would be too much since our home is air conditioned. I've read they like consistancy

Don't worry. As long as it is not really cold, they do not mind water too much. I have kept them over what is called summer this far north untill mid-oktober. At first frost rumours they moved inside, to go without watering for a long time. They flowered wevery winter, loving the treatment. Just do not water a plant that is not in a warm situation and not growing, like all succulents. But in warm weather, water is mainly a problem if they are soaked for a long time. So I would leave them outside and just let Ms Weather take care.

Hopefully my last question for awhile. Since my baby Jade is growing inside with a light, is there any change to my routine with it once the temps outside change.
Once it dries out and I get my act together in watering it and fertilizing once a month, what changes in the colder months with indoor care of my bonsai?
Our home is a constant 76 degrees.
Thanks

This page says you can suspend watering in winter. They should go dormant and after dormancy they should produce flowers.
Not sure if I would completely stop watering - I'd probably keep a close eye on the leaves, see if they start to get wrinkly, and if they do, water a bit.

Thanks, you and leatherback have been so kind and helpful. I will look up that site.
I spent a lot of time today viewing this site and am in awe of the masters of the art of bonsai. I hope to continue to study and maybe next year get some outside trees. One thing at a time though and now my priority is keep my little jade alive and healthy.

This is certainly not a casual hobby.

With Jade trees it can be. I think however that portocularia is more demanding than crassula. I have not grown portocularia; Mine were Crassula too.
