What species of Juniper is this? was created by Keefer

My wife and I bought a starter bonsai, but the market we bought it from didn't have any information about it other than that it was a juniper... Hopefully a picture is all it takes for this community to identify its species (I figured there can't be too many which are generally chosen to bonsai for starter kits)

Also, half of the pot seems to be filled with rocks and pebbles all glued together and in place. Does this serve a purpose?

Thanks!

This is a needle type juniper, but which sub species I don't know. It is a juniper in a pot, and junipers are suitable for bonsai, but this is not trained as a starter bonsai.

Better not to buy bonsai material from people who cannot tell you what they are selling...

You'd be surprised...

This is typically practiced by companies that sell decorative plants as bonsai. Pebbles and certainly glue serve no purpose in bonsai, they're only used for decoration and to make the plant look like more than that what it actually is: just a juniper in a pot.

Thank you. Any idea how old trees like this are by the time they're potted and sold like this? I don't know when or how to begin training it.

Not sure why the age is relevant, but it is quite young, a few years.

2 years. A cutting from last year, rooted over winter, with side-branches grown this year.

It will need a bit of growing before it is ready for bonsai training. A bit being, years.

It is most likely a young cutting (as others have suggested) from a Procumbens nana. Do you like Junipers and the art of 名媛直播?. I suggest you start reading.

Start by reading this book: 名媛直播 Basics, Step-by-Step Guide to Growing, Training & General Care by Christian Pessey and Rémy Samson (it is suggested here on bonsaiempire.com)

If you truly like Junipers, and want to learn everything about them:

You see that cover? that's how a Juniper 名媛直播 looks like. Of course a pro made that, but it gives you an idea.
