Hi there. I adopted this beautiful tree 2 years ago from someone who did not appreciate it as a bonsai but thoroughly loved it as a house plant. It has thrived on my desk at work and grown ever so slightly. I've re-potted it because the original pot was round bottomed and I figured it would do better in a flat bottom, rectangular pot. It has. Unfortunately, I do not know the species. I have done some research in a few books at the library and on the web and the foliage looks an awful lot like a Magnolia Stellata but there's only one problem...this tree has never flowered! Is this normal or have I identified it incorrectly?
Thank you for any insights. I hope to have this tree for many years to come and am looking forward to learning how to care for it long term.

It looks like the ficus ginseng that Ikea sells. And it looks fairly healthy. If I've identified it correctly, it needs lots of light. I have one of these, and because the winters here only have about 6 hours of sunlight, and generally are cloudy, I needed to use a lamp to prevent the tree from losing all of it's leaves. This might help:
As far as bonsai is concerned.... they are very difficult if not impossible to make into bonsai... as I have seen and learned. The problem is, the branches and trunk don't usually grow in the same way. And while it has an interesting trunk, branch placement, thickness, and a host of other things is off...
have a look at the examples of ficus on the website here... and then look here:
sorry about the German, but if you look at both pictures, you will see some differences.

It's a ficus houseplant, that's probably why they were keeping it as a houseplant.

It is a house plant, not a 名媛直播. 名媛直播 are not for office's desk. Can be made into 名媛直播, but as others have suggested, it will be a waste of time, unless you really know what you're doing.

Thank you everyone. I will continue to treat this as a house plant. Nice to know what it is. Ikea eh? Didn't even realize they had stuff like this but just learned something new.
