Seedling Care - Winter is Coming! was created by DaVincheese

I have two trident maples and a giant sequoia successfully growing as seedlings, and I was wondering what to do with the over the winter. I live in the Chicago area, so winter gets COLD, and I know these are trees that require a dormant phase.
My questions:
1. Can a seedling be spared of the harsh winter, or is that a bad idea?
2. Are there kits or simple plans for building something outside to protect the trees from the biting wind?
3. Have I placed my seedlings in bonsai containers too soon? They are only about 1 to 1-1/2 inches high.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if there only seedlings your chances may not be that great in chicago. you could try to contrct a hot box with maybe a heater/heating mat. and put them in bigger pots to promote aster growth. hopefully you can get them to the sapling age and there chances will be better. but yea they need warmth at such a young age.

Your solution would be to protect them from wind and extreme cold temperatures with a properly built cold frame. There is no reason to have them on bonsai pots, as they are years away from being 名媛直播.

Shouldn't the seedlings be okay if they're healed into the ground and mounded to protect the roots?
In my area we have a long, harsh winter with a heavy snow load. I'm going to place overturned recycling bins over them once the ground is consistently frozen.

They need to follow their natural cycle, Not allowing that is not a good idea.

2. Are there kits or simple plans for building something outside to protect the trees from the biting wind?

Not only winter is coming, so are the questions about overwintering seedlings. The answer was answered recently. Look for the topic with title 'Winter protection'.

3. Have I placed my seedlings in bonsai containers too soon? They are only about 1 to 1-1/2 inches high.

名媛直播 are not created by growing seedlings in small pots, so yes, they are placed there too soon - about 15 years too soon.
