I have to say, you have a lot of really great stuff on your site, LB.

Yes, indeed. That one. It is VERY slow starting though. Has created about 6 leaves this year.

And thanks! Need to write some articles again. Just can't seem to be bothered!

The trident that was given to me, is pretty bare on one side. Has anyone had experience in growing branches on trident's? (other than grafting).

I have two tridents - but no experience with this issue. I'd say best plan would be to make sure the bare side is the one that gets the most light.

Rerouting the energy could help, but it's a little late in the season for it. By rerouting, I mean pruning areas of strong growth to provide energy for weaker areas. In the spring, this could be cutting back vigorous shoots. In early-mid summer, it could be defoliating certain areas. This can provide a hormone balance to slow growth at one end & increase strength in another. With it being August right now, either of these techniques could really stress the tree out and weaken it, which you don't want before dormancy. It just means you'll be prepared for next spring! And Auk is right, the sunny side might promote future buds for next year. And if all else fails, you could dive into some grafting - never know until you try.
Good luck, friend!

Thank you both for the advice. I appreciate it. I'll attach a picture for reference.

The tree looks healthy, that's good. I'd aim that area to the sun & look for next year's buds. As the vigorous ones start to open, pluck the center from the new growth to slow them down. Hopefully new buds will form in the bare areas.

If you trim this at the end of winter, you should get lots of new buds popping, I would say.

Nice.
I read somewhere that pruning late fall/winter means lots of bud growth in the spring, while pruning in summer promotes lots of root growth. Anyone else read/heard that?
Sounds like a potential ticket, simplysaid.

does not make sense to me. Root growth in fall occurs when the plant moves sugars to the below-ground areas for winter storage. Less foliage = less storage in my view?
