Our Japanese Maple bonsai was recently damaged by sun. It shriveled and browned about 90% of the leaves. After much research online, we deleafed/defoliated it very carefully. That was almost 3 weeks ago. There is still no sign of new buds or leaves . I've been reading that we should've seen at least something in about a week and a half. Any thoughts?? We live in southeast U.S. (Georgia), so pretty hot temps right now. We since moved it to a semi-shaded spot.
How long should it take to see some healing!? Thanks.

I thought Japanese Maple's sort of like the sun, Maples like water, too, especially on hot days (don't over water).
If you took a picture, it may help...
Since it's July and HOT, it may take a little longer to bud out, Cross your fingers...
we really don't know what may have killed it

Yes it is not sun it is the lack of water at the roots that causes the problem. If the leaves were that bad then it may have gone too far, Keep watering and hope. 3 weeks is not long. Defoliating is not a good idea at any time but when the tree is stressed it is even worse. I would have removed the worst ones and left as many as possible.

It is definitely not in need of water. In fact, the professional that I finally spoke to last week said we need to be very careful about watering after removing the leaves! He also confirmed that the issue was indeed sun damage.
Also, we DID only remove damaged leaves. Unfortunately, that included almost all of them
Keeping fingers crossed. See attached pics. At least the smaller guy survived (to the left of big guy).
Thanks again!

Hope you have it in the shade. Sunburn on bark is a real risk now.
