Hi there,

I recently received a Chinese Elm 名媛直播 for my birthday. I have only had it for a week and have noticed that there is white fluff growing on the soil :(

I am finding conflicting opinions on the internet and thought it'd be best to ask the experts as to what it could be and how I can treat it!?

Thanks,

Picture?

Could be calcium, could be fungus.

You'll find conflicting opinions here, too.
Also, no one here is really an expert (bar a few). That doesn't mean we can't be right, though.

It sounds like it's mold but we'd need a picture to be sure.
If it is mold then scrape off the top layer of soil - and replace it with your regular potting soil - and look up proper watering techniques so that it doesn't grow back.

Ah pictures would have been helpful yes! Please see attached.
I have also noticed a couple of the leaves have gone yellow — apparently it could be due to overwatering?

Do you have a humidity sensor on your place?. I live in first floor of a building facing east. It is very humid and dark, and most of my house plants get mold during summer. I just take them outsife cause i can. It is just too much trouble, as it grows really easily. Ive have success using drier soil, improving watering, blah blah... but honestly, nothing better an easier than taking them outside and bringing them back in fall.
