New Here and have some questions was created by jm_middleton07

Hi everyone. I went on a family vacation last month and seen some bonsai gardens. Ive been hooked ever since. I have been reading on the net ever since. I have a tree in mind to save it from being cut. It is a spruce and I'm not sure where to start or if I should even use it. I just need to know is it worth using and where should I start. I have a rough idea of what I should do but I don't want to start out all wrong or with out some others opinions. Any help or input will be appreciated. My images are too big to upload so here is a link to my dropbox.

I want a tree that is going to survive the ky climate. I don't want an inside tree cause I don't have the room. Outside I have plenty of room. I do have other field grown trees or shrubs I could use. Nandina, boxwood and a slew of deciduous trees.

I do not know what a KY climate is. However, spruce is not the easiest of trees to keep. As a beginner, I would recommend you to strt with maple, yew, ulmus or something like that. Get used to caring for it, keeping it alive in a container, and go from there.

Just close the pop-up, you don't have to sign up.

Agreed with leatherback, leave this one until you can care for it. Buxus is a fairly 'easy' species to care for, mind posting some pictures of the plants you had in mind?

And besides.. In order to keep the info together it is better to have pictures on the forum itself. Once the pic is removed from the dropbox it is otherwise unavailable for future visitors.
I do not use dropbox. Too many security issues.

Looks like dwarf alberta spruce, which is pretty common in the garden section of Lowes, Home Depot, etc., but could be any number of spruces used for xmas trees or decorative landscape. Our county produces the largest number of these type trees in Virginia. They're hardy, but for bonsai, you're going to have loads of work on your hands. Digging, training, hoping for back-buds. If you're just starting off, I'd recommend going a little smaller & working your way up.

Go for it if you want, but keep in mind the skill level needed to turn this thing around... and time - you're looking at decades here.

Good luck!

This tree and a few others are planted next to a mobile home hookup. We stopped renting years ago and sold the mobile home but the landscaping remains. Or the trees and shrubs remain. My wife and mother are pushing for me to remove the ugly tree. I figured it had a large trunk and maybe I could use it instead of cutting it down. If I did use it I don't even know where to start. I see a lot of people trunk cutting these larger trees. Then growing them for a year or longer. What is a good source/ book I can get that will outline things for a beginner?
