What to do with Japanese maple?

I haven't had my Japanese Maple for too long now, and thus far it's been a tough road. I tried following care instructions provided, by my maple eventually had some of its green leafs turn somewhat brown. After trimming the leafs it went well for a bit - though it's winter time now (South Africa) and while temperatures are around 13ish+ during the day at the moment, it can drop to around 6 degrees or so late at night.
My maple has dropped all its leafs. Is this normal?
Additionally.I'm not sure what condition to expose it to during this season and temperatures. Should I keep it outside at all times or bring it in at night? I have a spot outside which is out of the wind and could place it in some afternoon sun and move when needed - though this was what I did before my maple started looking all sickly and dropping its leafs.
I'm quite lost with how to care for this one

Japanese maples aren't evergreen so they drop their leaves in Autumn/Fall.

The Maple is hardy to -12C so it must be outside at all times. As you just sadi it is your winter then surely it is perfectly normal for a deciduous tree to lose leaves?

Stop moving the plant around. Plants do not like changes.
