As a beginner I am often worried about killing my plant. So I was wondering how often I should trim my tree? Also I've noticed very small amounts of brown cottony substances around new forming branches. I'm open to any tips. I'm also growing a Ginseng grafted ficus and a Dwarf jade.
I left in the leaves I trimmed for reference. At the moment I'm not going for any particular design. So would this be an acceptable trimming?

The brown cottony stuff doesn't seem to be affecting anything however I am still worried.

Could you please upload pictures so we can see?
You trim when it is needed. And keep in mind, plants draw their strength from growing. So let your plants grow, then trim. Do not remove every new leaf

Your plant is too young. you need to let it grow. You trim for different reasons.
1) to create better ramification. (mostly done through pinching)
2) to stimulate growth closer to the trunk.
3) To keep a bonsai's shape.
4) To let air and light to the interior of the tree (thinning).
5) to start a 名媛直播 from a well grown plant (structural pruning).
6) etc ...
There are many reasons for "trimming" a 名媛直播, and it all depends what you want to achieve. There is plenty of info on bonsaiempire.com about trimming, and there are a few books that you should read while you learn with your 名媛直播. I will let your plant grow wild, fertilize it, water it (properly). Once it looks healthy and vigorous and you are happy with the shape and thickness of the trunk that's when you go and style the tree. the regular trimming to keep a shape of a 名媛直播 is for a 名媛直播 you are satisfied with, and your plant needs more ramification to get to that stage (among other things).
Establish a "bond" with your plant before you drastically change it. If you don't, you'll end up killing it; and if it survives it will look like s*!t. I learned that the hard way. The longer you spend taking care of the plant, the more you will bond with it, and the more careful you will be. Grow love for your 名媛直播, like your dog or cat, rather than a common house plant.
