I purchased this bonsai at Kroger for my husband for his birthday, and I think it may be a ficus, but I'm not sure. It's been losing a lot of leaves recently.

We keep it in the pass-through between our kitchen and dining room beside our fish tank.

I was going to guess ficus but both are hardy plants and great at photosynthesis. But they need sunlight in order to function. They can be kept indoors. I have had a lot of luck with ficus in a large south facing window (i'm in the northern hemisphere). But like most trees and plants, they would prefer to be outside and would thrive in partial shade. let the top 1/2 inch of soil get a Little bit dry Before watering, Especially indoors. It sounds like the tree has starting to go dormant for the winter. inside the house in the air conditioning without much sunlight. if you keep it in a window, it will go dormant in the colder months (when the sun is father away) and lose its leaves. but they will grow back in the string. I think it was tricked into sleepy-time early.

Thanks. I'll start giving it some outside time. I left it out for about 6 hours today, and pulled the moss back when I brought it in to check the soil moisture. When I did, I found tons of tiny bugs under the moss, and now I'm worried about my tree.

Oh No!, they really don't like it when you move them around, just leave it outside, until it gets cold out there. or inside, near a window.
