Hey guys,
Have a 20 year old ficus - not a mallsai - and recently the tips of the leaves have been turning black. See pics.
Now I ensure that I water it only when it needs water by checking the soil (originally I was told 1,5 liters every two days) but still can't quite nurse the guy back to health. There is a lot of new growth, but as the leaf starts to mature, it goes black on the tip and eventually falls off before getting full size.
I need help - have been searching the web for a month looking for this specific problem, but most posts say over watering. I am thinking a repot - but don't want to put the tree under undue stress. Also, it is mid winter here so prob not ideal for re-potting.
Please assist? I love this tree (Hikaru) and do not want to lose him.

This looks very much like problems with the roots. Rotting/dying. Did you repot?
ONLY water a plant when the soil is starting to dry out. Do not keep wet constantly. 1.5l every two days.. That is 1/2 of what my 2.5 tall fig tree gets: Sounds like way too much.

have you kept it yourself for those 20 years?how long have you been caring for it? indoors all 4 seasons? has it been losing its leaves every year?
when is the last time it was repotted? Does the soil always look that wet? Long time in the same pot plus wet roots equals root rot. In that case, repot it and trim off the black soggy roots. maybe try .5 liters every two days. or, when the top layer gets a bit dry, water until it begins to drain from the bottom of the pot, then do not water until the top cm is dry again. but check regularly.
I like the canopy, i hope it pulls through for you.

Hey there, did the bonsai become healthy again. I have a few month old wisteria and it's doing the same. When it was a seedling it started happening, so I put it into a pot with soil and it's doing it still.
Would really like to stop it so it is healthy and grows properly.
