bonsai loss of leaves in heat wave

My Viburnum was outside while i was out of town last week. During the heat wave, my wife watered the tree twice a day (but it was in a heavier soil). When i got home, the leaves all fell. I am seeing just a small bit of green. I have brought it inside, changed the soil to a "bonsai" soil, trimmed the roots a bit and trimmed off the dead parts of the branches. Is there a way to save this tree? I really dont want to lose it.

I'm not too familiar with viburnum but I'm fairly sure that they go outside. You appear to have known this, so I am surprised that you moved it indoors. Can I ask why you did this?
Also, trimming the roots may have caused stress that may contribute to further decline of the tree.
It looks as if it is alive, as there is a small bit of green. Is the plant still growing?

Hey Ed,
I moved it inside due to the continued heat and i thought that it may be too stressed outside yet. I could put it out in the shade and continue to water. I was just not sure what to do. Consider it possible stupidity on my part. I only trimmed a very limited amount of roots. Just the tips, because i changed to the better soil. Also a mistake? I am just trying to get things right! The plant has not produced any new leaves, but only lost them about 6 days ago. I am just not sure what to do.

When you root prune, it may take a while for the healing process to finish up. Keep your soil damp, not wet. This could mean every few days or so instead of every day. If there is life left, & it survives, you may see new buds/leaves in as little as a few weeks, but it may take up to two months. Just keep an eye on it for now, protect from heavy winds & direct sun. It should stay outside, unless it's another scorcher.
Sorry to hear about the heat wave. We had ours last week, too, and I was also out of town. Lost one tree. Heavy damage on another.

So sorry about your tree. I will put in a mostly shady spot and keep the soil slightly moist. Thank you for your help. Fingers crossed
