This is a young Juniper.
Lots of sun. Keep on the dry side, and in very well draining substrate. Wire branches to allow light in the inside of the tree.
Keep in mind that branches without green on them die off; So never trimm off all the green; Ideally, never truim off more than 30% of the whole tree. And never cut off all the growing tips: This stresses this plant a lot.
You of course know these plants need to be outside right?

The man I bought it from yesterday told my husband to literally put it in water to water it and all kinds of other things. This is our first bonsai.

This is something I would never do, least of all with a juniperus.Amber1223 wrote: The man I bought it from yesterday told my husband to literally put it in water to water it and all kinds of other things.

Placing the whole pot in water to water the tree is only really helpful if you are doing a re-potting with super dry soil that needs to be soaked in order to be able to hold water at all. Best thing is keep it outside and water it only when the top half inch feels dry. let it get used to you and the way you care for the tree before any other work. Keep it alive before you work on it. Also, all trees have a slightly different time of the year that they like pruning and re-potting. Do not do both at the same season either. you could also plant in the garden for a year or more to get the trunk to thicken up.
Good luck. The hard part is just keeping a tree in a pot alive, everything else will come in time.
