I just purchased this ficus retusa from Wigert via ebay. I want to share this hobby with my 5 year old son who already enjoys helping me with our orchids and was amazed recently when we saw a bonsai collection ("little model trees") at a local botanical garden. I'm as big a rookie in the bonsai world as they come, but this looked like a relatively mature tree that we could potentially start working on right away. Bought a few other trees that i plan to grow out for another year or 3.
My question(s) - Am i jumping the gun to begin working on this tree, should i let it acclimate to it's new home? Would you recommend repotting it in the same container or can we move it to a bonsai pot? If the latter, any suggestions on pot size and shape for this tree (it's in a 10" plastic pot as shown). I've read that we should not root and top prune in the same season , if that's correct, which should we do first? I've spent hours reading forums and articles, i'm just looking for some opinions / advice on this particular tree. Thanks for any advice you can provide.

If you are just starting out, it is always good to fiirstget used to care for plants. You write you keep orchids, which are not usually easy to kee either, assuming you are not in the tropics. That being sad.. Give the tree a few weeks to settle in at your place, and your care-rythm. Once you get good new growth, you could work it. I would not repot now. First trim/wire and let it recover. Having the stable rootball will assist in recovery. Then, after the tree has started to show good growth, and foliage is thickening, repot.
