[Help] Chinese Elm Leaves dropping

I recently got a chinese elm and left it in care of a friend having the same type of bonsai for a week. Now, after I got it back, the leaves switched colour and started to drop. I'm not sure about the reason, but I'm worried if it could be pests. I attached files for examples of the leaves. They seem to be mottled and sometimes more so in the edges, turning brownish/yellow. Could it be a pest or is it just because it was in, perhaps, a too cold environment?
Thanks for any advice!

Where is it? How was it watered? If it is in the house then it is not surprising that the leaves are yellowing. Cold? The species is hardy to -12c at least. They need sunlight.

he had it outdoors much of the time, otherwise it is always by the window which is slightly open normally, and it has been quite sunny around here. It is watered maybe once a day/every second day when there's a lot of sun since the pot is quite small. Now I keep it inside by the window since I cant have it outdoors. It arrived maybe 3 weeks ago after it had been shipped in a box for almost 2 weeks.

If it was in a box for two weeks then it is not surprising, also you must not water to a schedule. Check every day and water when the soil is almost dry.

What I've seen with my chinese elm, is that changing it's location a lot makes it drop some of it's leaves. Inside then outside, then more sun less sun... is not really good for the tree. does it have new buds? or other new growth?

Yeah Im guessing the change to outdoors may had an effect on it. I can only find one new bud and 2-3 other potential growth, bud/new branch. One source I checked was
but I have a hard time determining which case it could be. Or maybe it is just the changing environment as you said.

looks root-related, maybe too wet or aftereffects of trimming and not re-rooting? (see the brown/yellow smearing of the leaves?)
Has it been repotted recently? Or is the rootball constantly wet?

I got it about 3-4 weeks ago so maybe it was repotted before shipping but other than that the root has not been touched. Some leaves also looked to have turned more dark on the edges which, according to the link, could be over watering. Actually I dont really know how to check if the root ball is constantly wet, feeling in the hole under the pot maybe? When I water it I heard that the water should flow through the pot so I make sure the it gets wet in the hole underneath which often times takes a lot of water until it goes completely through. When I do this watering I water it in one go. If this is a wrong technique, is it better to water it thouroughly and wait a 5-10 min and see if the water has gone through otherwise give it some more water?
Thanks for your replies by the way! Im quite new to this so any advice is good.

Sometimes, you can listen Hubby. Besides, it's dying inside, won't hurt to try outside. Actually, elms, just love to be outside (hate inside). Partial shade for the first week or so.
