You have been tricked. This is not a bonsai (yet) but merely a young cutting frmo a juniper.

It will be a decade or more of dedicated growing by a person who knows what to do before this could become a bonsai I am afraid.

What species (if any) could I work from to train it into a 名媛直播 over time? Should I just work from the Common Juniper (Juniperus communis) as a unorthodox guide?

As bonsai is not a species, the correct question is not 'what type of bonsai tree', but 'what type of tree'.
It's a juniper and, as LB said, it's not a bonsai.

Your particular species appears to be j. procumbens (nana) a.k.a. dwarf garden juniper. It is commonly used for these types of decorative plant arrangements (sometimes known as mallsai). As said before, years of growth required before it becomes bonsai.

Thank you! That helps a lot. I have read that many of these dwarfed trees can be nicely shaped. I will do my best. If anything it will help me to learn and get into the hobby before I purchase a real bonsai.

Hm. Seems you did not get the point. This is NOT a dwarfed tree. It is a young cutting of a juniper.
To make it more clear: they've just cut of a small branch from a mature juniper and put it in the ground.

It is no good as bonsai start material. It is a decorated plant.
The dead moss, the stone and the pebbles are all for decorative purposes and have nothing to do with bonsai.

You can remove all of it and let the plant grow for many years. Before that, there's nothing you can do with this plant to make it a bonsai.

Got it! Thanks. I removed the stones and fake moss that was glued to the soil to allow the roots to breathe. I am purchasing bonsai soil online now to repot the Juniper tree. It is on my patio in a fairly sunny spot and will not be taken indoors. I will deal with winterizing it when Winter arrives end of year.

do you have a garden?
plant it in the garden for 10 years and let it grow.. maybe after that you have something you can start a bonsai from..
