I have been keeping the soil wet but it seems to still be wilting.
It is in a very small pot so I'm not sure if the roots need trimming and could be causing this.
Hopefully someone can help.

A year old? So, a seedling, not a bonsai?

If it starts wilting a week after you purchased it, I'd take it back to the seller and ask for a refund or replacement.
Even if you overwatered it, a week would not be long enough (unless maybe when you've kept it soaking wet the whole week).

Do you mean a bonsai pot? A year old plant should not be in a bonsai pot. Or is it a seedling in a plastic container?
A photo would help.

I have attached a picture....I'm a complete newbie to This - it was an impulse buy so I'm learning on my feet.

That plant is definately not 1 year old, but, I guess, about 7 or 8.
I see roots coming out of the pot, looks like it is rootbound and needs to be repotted.
The (what I think are) algae, on the top of the soil (The green patches) indicate the tree has been far too wet for an extended period in a soil that doesn't drain well. You should not have kept the soil wet all the time.
The above are guesses based on the photos, I cannot really see the soil clearly.
I'd take it back and ask for a refund. Alternatively, you can try and repot it. The pot is not too small. Look up the guidelines for Ligustrum on this website (under the Species Guide).

When you water the plant how do you water it? It looks like this plant has a very dense rootbal, which may cause the roots not to get water, even if you water extensively. To me, it looks like the water will runn off to the sides.
If the picture is a picture of the plant now, it looks OK to me. It would however need to be repotted. Ideally you do this with someone who knows how to do this.

I reckon I'm going to repot it then because that seems like the General concensus.
I have found this premixed soil online
Is this worth using?
Do I need to add akadama or can I use clay cat litter?
Or do I not have to use this?
Thanks again!
