It is either sunburn, or some kind of infection. If your new growth is healthy probably the first. If not, probably the latter.

i have some redwoods in the garden..

only does this when the branch is damaged and dieing.. something must have happened..

It is very difficult to see the general condition of the tree, if you just have photos of a few needles. Which means if the two spaces you have photographed are the only spots of their kind it could be nothing, as needle leafed trees shed needles from time to time. But, as was said earlier, it is impossible to tell from the pictures you posted.

So what answer would you like to hear? That would save me the trouble guessing, until finally get it.
