$4 would be acceptable - if it includes the pot.

It did. I paid nowhere near $10 USD

Anything here NOT look like just another cash grab?

Having seen loads of websites and 'bonsai' for extreme prices I'm going to say this one isn 't actually so bad.
If that Procumbens juniper does look like the one on the photo, I'd might even want to buy it.

However, the plants should be considered pre-bonsai. They are not so interesting and need a lot of work.

An expected, but flawed response. There is nothing elitist about stating what is true.

Incorrect, and I anticipated this generic excuse -- you can be helpful and cordial without taking the high and mighty approach. It's clear I'm a novice so would it pain you to explain your answers instead of dictating them?

It is not an excuse. If you think it is elitist, than that's how you want to read it.

I plan to. I don't give up so easily

That's a good thing and something you will need as a future bonsai grower.

Yeah I get that.. I was under the impression that's what I had, before realizing bonsai is not a species but rather an idea

Hmm. I wonder where you suddenly got that (correct) idea from. Seems you know more than you pretend. You're not a troll, are you?

If I tried to develop it into bonsai (yes, over the course of many years, I get that) then it would need to go into the ground is what you are saying then?

Tricky one. It is small and fragile. In full soil would be preferable, but it might get damaged. Maybe you can grow it taller and stronger first - you would have to repot several times to larger pots.

Does anybody see any potentially good first choice for a novice user? I remain dedicated to TRYING to let my tiny tree grow.. But if I can also cut to the chase by buying a more mature tree in an exotic species, I'd totally spend the money on it

It will take time, but junipers are among the best for beginners trees. It does need a bigger pot, to big a pot is not good. I wouldn't go out and spend a bunch of money on bonsai stuff, until you learn more about them.
