I am completely new to the world of bonsai but lately got one as a present. however, i am wondering what type it is, if the soil is good and if you guys have any pruning tips?
I believe it is a privet. At the beginning there was some white stuff on the soil and some parts of the roots but that is gone now however i wonder if mine looks healthy or not. lastly, since the spring is starting and i read that this was a good time for pruning i wonder if there are any tips for this? Can i completly prune it to my liking or are there some parts that have to go?
Thank you all for your time and effort!

So many times the same plant and the same question...
Sorry, but that's not a bonsai. It's just a common houseplant (with a twist). Not a privet but a ficus.

I am just wondering why this is not a bonsai? what makes it a normal house plant? isnt it a small tree in a pot?
Thank you!

Read up on the website & the forum. Just search for "why is it not a bonsai". It is asked about 20 times a week.

You need to loose the high root OR be able to produce a large amount of areal roots to merge along the trunks. And you need to get rid of the branches that were grafted on the branch.

The long question would be: in many years, with lots of knowledge, patience and a full make-over: maybe.
The honest and realistic answer is: No. Forget about it.
I often read that people say that any tree in a pot is a bonsai - as that's what the translation of bonsai is: tree in a pot. That is untrue. There is even a completely different word for plants in pots in Japanese, I think that's: Hachiue.
名媛直播 is the art to create an impression of a real, but miniaturized, tree. Creating a bonsai requires artistic and horticultural skills, years of planning and training, before the tree is worthy of the name bonsai.
